These are custom made removable prosthesis for missing teeth and can be taken out and put back into your mouth. They are two types broadly

Complete dentures:

It is a removable prosthesis that replaces all teeth within an arch, thus some patients have only an upper denture, some only a lower and some have both upper and lower complete dentures.

Overdentures:

  • It utilizes either existing teeth / on dental implants
  • To rest a denture,
  • To aid in retention and stability.

There are different design of over dentures. Many are fabricated to literally snap into place

Biofunctional prosthetic system (bps) dentures: these are high quality dentures from ivoclar, viva dent switzerland. Bps dentures are

  • More comfortable,
  • Odourless,
  • Have great fit and esthetics,
  • To speak with confidence.

Conventional partial denture: it is a removable appliance that can replace anywher from one teeth to many teeth, wire, clasp anchor the denture to the remaining natural teeth.

Flexible dentures: these are an alternative option for the rigid dentures. It allows the prosthesis to adapt to the constant movement and flexibility to the mouth.the flexibility combined with strength and light weight makes the prosthesis more comfortable.

Crowns and bridges: the crown is used to entirely cover/cap the damaged tooth. Besides strengthening the damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape/alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth like shape and structure for function.

Porcelain/ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of a natural teeth, other materials include gold, metal alloys, acrylic.

Bridges: they are commonly used to replace one or more missing teeth.they span the space where the teeth are missing, bridges are cemented to the natural teeth/implants surrounding the empty space using dental cements.these teeth are called abutments, which serve as anchor for the bridge.

Both crown and most bridges are fixed prosthesis, unlike removable prosthesis such as dentures which you can take out and clean daily, it can only be removed by the dentist.

Consequences of missing teeth: gaps/spaces left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining tooth to rotate/shift into the empty spaces ,resulting in a bad bite. The inbalanced caused by missing teeth can also leads to gum diseases ,dental caries and tempromandibular joint(joint of jaw bones) disorder.
