It is the specialty of dentistry that is concerned with the treatment of improper bites and crooked teeth (improper positioning of teeth). Dentofacial orthopedics deal with the control and modification of facial growth.
Malocclusion literally means bad bite, it is not a disease, but abnormal alignment of the teeth and the way the upper and lower teeth fit together.
Simple treatment may be carried out with a removable brace (a plate that can be taken out to be cleaned). It has delicate wires and springs attached, which move the teeth using gentle pressure.
Fixed appliances: often, teeth need to be guided more accurately than they can be done using a removable braces, so a fixed braces is used. This has brackets and bands which are temporarily stuck to the teeth.a ‘flexibles wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to be moved. You can’t take the appliances out yourself so it is called a fixed appliance.
They are tough, clear plastic aligners (moulds) that are used to straigten the teeth. Several sets are specially moulded, slightly different aligners are made for each patient. Each set of aligners is worn for two weeks before being replaced with the next one. They are made from clay plastic, so they are nearly invisible. They cn be easily removed for eating, drinking, brushing and for cleaning your teeth. You need to have all your adult teeth before you can have this treatment.
